WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO START YOUR OWN BUSINESS?
I had grown up in a family of entrepreneurs – my parents had run businesses and worked for themselves my entire life. This combined with a desire to help people directly fuelled my desire to start my own venture.
HOW DID THE HELP YOU GOT FROM BACD IMPACT YOU AND YOUR BUSINESS?
BACD and the advisory centre network has been instrumental in helping to start my business.
I first participated in the Starter Company program, and then the Faster Forward program to kick start my business. Teresa Shaver from the BACD has helped so much in establishing my business in the Durham region, helping set up my business for success.
HOW DO YOU MARKET YOUR BUSINESS?
There are many ways that I market my business – so far in-person business networking has been my best marketing tool. By building my referral network, I have been able to promote my business locally. I also like to volunteer my time and expertise with centre like the Welcome Centre and the New Canadian Centre. Other than this, using SEO techniques for my business has been instrumental, as so many people find me online.
WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO SOMEONE WHO WANTS TO START THEIR OWN BUSINESS?
I would say do your research and find a mentor! Having participated in the Starter Company program, I was required to put together a detailed business plan that helped me lay the groundwork needed to start my business successfully. I conducted extensive research to ensure that there was a market for my business, and just how much money and time was required to launch my venture.
Through the program, I also was introduced to multiple business mentors, with whom I still work with monthly to this day. It is tough to be in business on your own – having mentors is crucial to having experienced businesspeople help guide you in your decisions.
