Creating Beautiful Hats and Meaningful Experiences

The Visual Experience by Visual Hats is a luxury millinery and creative experience brand that blends fashion, creativity, and connection.

Founder Nneka Adaelu designs bespoke hats and fascinators for women who appreciate craftsmanship, individuality, and confidence. Beyond custom headwear, she also offers luxury hat-making experiences for corporate teams, bridal celebrations, private events, and community groups, along with DIY hat-making kits that bring the experience home.

Based in Oshawa, Visual Hats serves clients across Canada, the United States, and beyond.

Inspired by Family and Heritage

Nneka’s journey into millinery began with her grandmother, who introduced her to the art of hat making. What started as a family tradition grew into a lifelong passion and eventually a successful business.

After building Visual Hats in Nigeria, Nneka brought the business with her to Canada and expanded her vision beyond creating hats. She wanted women to experience the joy of creating something beautiful themselves while building meaningful connections with others.

That vision became The Visual Experience.

Building a Strong Foundation

As an immigrant entrepreneur, Nneka sought support to better understand how to grow and structure a business in Canada.

Through BACD and the Starter Company Plus program (Funded by the Government of Ontario), she gained valuable mentorship, grant funding, and one-on-one support. Working with Patrice Esper and Chantel from CE Marketing Solutions helped her approach her business more strategically while strengthening her understanding of financial management, business structure, and growth planning.

Just as importantly, BACD helped her build valuable connections within Durham Region’s entrepreneurial community.

Growing With Purpose

Today, Nneka operates from her home studio in Oshawa, where she creates custom designs and hosts clients by appointment.

While currently owner-operated, Visual Hats continues to expand through bespoke millinery services, creative experiences, and DIY hat-making boxes. The business is also finding new opportunities in the corporate and private event markets.

The Power of Connection

Social media, networking, and referrals have been some of the most effective ways to grow the business. Because Visual Hats is highly visual, platforms like Instagram allow customers to see the artistry behind each piece and experience.

Collaborations with local businesses and authentic relationships have also created valuable opportunities for growth.

Proud of the Journey

Nneka is most proud that Visual Hats has remained true to its purpose while evolving over more than ten years in business.

What began as a skill passed down from her grandmother has grown into an international brand serving women across multiple countries. Creating The Visual Experience and watching women proudly wear pieces they created themselves has been especially rewarding.

Advice for Entrepreneurs

“Do it scared.”

Nneka believes you don’t need to have everything figured out before you start.

“Start with what you have, keep moving, and trust that many of the pieces will come together as you grow.”
