Prep 4 Success
Prep 4 Success is an academic support and mentorship organization dedicated to helping student‑athletes turn their athletic talent into real academic opportunities.
The organization works with student‑athletes across multiple sports, providing structured academic guidance, mentorship, and accountability to ensure they succeed both in the classroom and in competition. Prep 4 Success supports students and their families as they navigate transcripts, eligibility requirements, academic expectations, and graduation pathways—helping athletes stay on track for post‑secondary opportunities.
At the heart of Prep 4 Success is a simple but powerful belief: athletics should open doors, not close them.
The Motivation Behind the Mission
Shanice was inspired to start Prep 4 Success after seeing how many talented student‑athletes struggle to balance the demands of sport with academic responsibilities.
She recognized that while athletic ability can create opportunity, many families lack the guidance needed to understand eligibility rules, academic requirements, and how education fits into long‑term success. Shanice wanted to build something that supports student‑athletes beyond the game—helping them develop discipline, focus, and a strong academic foundation that prepares them for life after high school.
Why BACD
Shanice connected with the Business Advisory Centre Durham to be part of a community that supports entrepreneurs and small business owners. She was looking for resources, guidance, and networking opportunities that would help her strengthen and grow Prep 4 Success while learning from others on similar journeys.
Learning the Bigger Picture of Business
Through being part of the Starter Company Plus Program with BACD, Shanice gained access to funding, resources, tools, and connections that helped her better understand what it takes to build a sustainable business. This program is funded through the Ministry of Economic Development, Job Creation and Trade.
Hearing real entrepreneurial experiences—such as Patrice sharing her own journey—helped reinforce that challenges are a normal part of business growth. This perspective helped Shanice see the bigger picture, stay resilient, and remain focused even when progress wasn’t linear.
Prep 4 Success has grown steadily since its founding, supporting student‑athletes through academic planning and guidance.
While the organization operates primarily from Toronto, it works with students across multiple locations through virtual support. The team includes a marketing contractor and a language specialist who assists with non‑English transcripts, allowing Prep 4 Success to provide personalized, focused support while remaining lean and efficient.
This structure enables Shanice to stay closely involved with each student’s journey while continuing to expand reach and impact.
How Prep 4 Success Reaches Families
Word‑of‑mouth referrals have been one of the most effective marketing tools for Prep 4 Success. Many new students come through recommendations from former students, parents, and coaches who have seen the impact of the program firsthand.
Digital channels also play an important role. The website, social media, and targeted email communication help share success stories, highlight services, and connect with families seeking academic guidance for student‑athletes.
Shanice is most proud of the impact Prep 4 Success has had on student‑athletes and their families. Helping students stay eligible, graduate, and move on to post‑secondary opportunities is deeply rewarding.
She’s also proud of the organization’s reputation for honest guidance and personalized support. Every student’s situation is unique, and being able to work closely with each one to find the best academic path while pursuing their sport is central to Prep 4 Success’s mission.
