BeeCraft Supply & Studio

BeeCraft Supply & Studio is a community‑centred business that brings people together through hands‑on workshops, beekeeping education, and practical support for both new and experienced beekeepers.

At BeeCraft, learning is experiential and welcoming. Workshops are designed to be accessible and engaging, offering participants the opportunity to build skills through making, slow down, and connect with others in a supportive environment. Alongside education, BeeCraft supplies essential beekeeping equipment, nucs, and queen bees, while offering ongoing mentorship and guidance rooted in responsible hive management and sustainable practices.

Through its workshops, outreach, and education, BeeCraft strengthens community connections while supporting healthy pollinator populations and sustainable craft practices.

A Second Career Rooted in Values

BeeCraft Supply & Studio was born from a significant career transition. After spending twenty years in health care as a Registered Midwife, Carolynn made the decision to step into a second career—one that aligned with her values of creativity, environmental stewardship, and community connection.

While her professional path shifted, her purpose remained the same: supporting people’s well‑being. BeeCraft allows Carolynn to do that through hands‑on learning, empowering teaching, and meaningful engagement with bee‑based and creative practices. Sharing beekeeping knowledge and introducing others to the wonders of bees continues to be a source of joy and inspiration.

Why BACD

Transitioning from a long career in health care into entrepreneurship meant learning an entirely new set of skills. Carolynn connected with the Business Advisory Centre Durham to ensure BeeCraft was built on a strong and sustainable foundation.

BACD provided guidance, resources, and mentorship that helped her clarify goals, strengthen business structure, and make informed decisions as BeeCraft grew from an idea into a community‑focused business.  Carolynn was part of the Starter Company Plus Program funded by the Ministry of Economic Development, Job Creation and Trade.

From Idea to Sustainable Business

Through BACD, Carolynn gained practical business knowledge along with clarity, confidence, and accountability as a business owner. The support reinforced the importance of thoughtful planning, sustainable growth, and aligning business decisions with personal values.

Mentorship from BACD respected Carolynn’s lived experience while encouraging her to develop new skills—helping her move forward with intention, resilience, and a stronger understanding of how to build a values‑driven business.

Growing With Intention

BeeCraft Supply & Studio has grown steadily in both size and operational maturity. The business has been able to hire employees to support workshops and retail operations, allowing Carolynn to focus more on business development and long‑term planning.

Since starting the Starter Company Plus program, workshop sales have more than tripled. BeeCraft has also improved its ability to plan retail purchasing and negotiate with suppliers—changes that have helped the business operate more smoothly while continuing to grow in a manageable, thoughtful way.

Community‑Driven Marketing

Community connection and outreach have been BeeCraft’s most successful marketing strategies. Collaborating with other entrepreneurs and local business owners has not only expanded visibility, but also deepened relationships and strengthened understanding of the community BeeCraft serves.

These partnerships continue to inspire next steps and support ongoing growth.

A Source of Pride

Carolynn is especially proud of the feedback BeeCraft receives. Hearing “that was great!” at the end of a workshop, reading positive reviews, and watching people connect through creativity are deeply rewarding moments.

Fostering joy, confidence, and genuine community connection is the heart of BeeCraft’s impact—and the most meaningful outcome of the work done behind the scenes.

Advice for Other Entrepreneurs

“Find your blind spots and work with them—or around them. The things we ignore are often the things that cause us the most harm in business.”

Final Reflection

Carolynn is grateful for the opportunity to work with BACD and for the resources and support shared along the way. That guidance continues to yield tangible results—not just for BeeCraft Supply & Studio, but for the wider Durham Region community it serves.
