Growing Food, Building Community: How O’Brien and Family Landscaping is Bringing Edible Landscapes to Durham Region
For more than two decades, Todd O’Brien has built a reputation for quality landscape construction through O’Brien and Family Landscaping. Now, he’s combining his passion for growing food with his landscaping expertise to help homeowners, businesses, and organizations create beautiful, productive outdoor spaces through edible landscaping and permaculture design.
Through Edible Landscaping and Garden Services, Todd designs and installs everything from herb gardens and container gardens to fruit orchards and food forests. These landscapes are carefully planned to work with nature, producing nutritious food while improving soil health, increasing biodiversity, and requiring less maintenance over time.
Todd’s passion for edible landscaping grew from his own experience. Over the last 10 years, he transformed his property into a thriving food forest and discovered firsthand the benefits of growing food in harmony with nature.
“There is nothing like growing your own food in a way that works with nature. The yields improve every year, the food tastes better, it’s more nutritious, and it creates a healthier environment. I wanted to bring these amazing food systems to others and show how accessible they can be.”
Todd was already familiar with Business Advisory Centre Durham (BACD) after participating in the Self-Employment Benefit Program when he launched his first business in 2004. When he decided to expand into edible landscaping, he knew where to turn for support.
Working with BACD advisor Teresa Shaver, Todd received guidance on website development, marketing strategy, content creation, Google Business Profile optimization, social media planning, and business development.
“The best value I received from BACD was direction. I received honest feedback, encouragement, action plans, and practical strategies that helped me build awareness and move the business forward. BACD was essential for getting me through the hurdles I was struggling with.”
Today, O’Brien and Family Landscaping employs three full-time staff members, including Todd’s son, while his wife manages administration and a second son joins the team during the summer months. Much of the company’s growth continues to come through referrals and word-of-mouth from satisfied customers.
What makes Todd most proud is the lasting impact of his work.
“Regenerating soil health, increasing biodiversity, and helping families grow nutritious food in their own backyard is incredibly rewarding. The potential for building stronger communities through food is inspiring.”
His advice for aspiring entrepreneurs is simple:
“Always provide high-quality work, never cut corners, and take the time to truly understand your clients’ needs and expectations.”
And for anyone considering what to do with their outdoor space, Todd leaves them with one question:
“What has your lawn done for you lately?”
