Bounty from the Boonies

Bounty from the Boonies is Carly McDougall’s love letter to plants, gardening, food, mental health, and community. Located in the heart of historic downtown Uxbridge, this vibrant retail storefront offers a unique experience that blends plant retail, handmade products, and community connection.

The shop features a curated collection of unique plants, planters, and accessories, along with a busy Potting Bar and a “Houseplant Hospital” where customers can learn how to care for and revive their plants. Just minutes away, Carly’s Suburban Homestead Gardens supply the shop with fresh ingredients used to create an expanding line of preserves, teas, body products, and their popular Nectar Honey.

Bounty from the Boonies has also become a local destination for events and workshops, including monthly Plant BINGO!, the Boonies Unplugged Concert Series, and hands-on workshops covering gardening, cooking, and creative crafts. At its core, the business is built on creating a safe, inclusive, and joyful space for the community.

The Inspiration

Carly’s entrepreneurial journey began early, she launched her first business at just 14 years old mowing lawns in her hometown of Zephyr.

After experiencing a significant mental health challenge in 2014, Carly found healing through plants, gardening, and food preservation. Over a decade-long recovery, these passions became the foundation of her future business. Knowing she needed flexibility to prioritize her well-being, Carly made the decision to work for herself.

While Bounty from the Boonies originally began in 2010, the business evolved and officially incorporated in 2024, with the retail storefront opening later that same year.

Why BACD

As Carly expanded her vision into a multi-faceted business which includes retail, food production, workshops, and events, she recognized the need for expert guidance.

Through the Business Advisory Centre Durham, Carly connected with business advisor Patrice Esper, who helped her refine her business model, validate her ideas, and navigate the complexities of launching a larger-scale operation. She also benefited from participating in the Starter Company Plus program (funded by the Ministry of Economic Development, Job Creation and Trade), gaining valuable tools and insights to support her growth.

With support from BACD, Carly developed a strong business plan and built the foundational systems needed to grow sustainably, including corporate administration, HR processes, and financial management practices.

Ongoing mentorship has also helped shift Carly’s perspective as an owner—encouraging her to focus on working on the business, not just in it.

Bounty from the Boonies continues to see strong momentum:

  • Sales have increased by 25% year-over-year in 2026
  • The team includes one full-time staff member, along with part-time and contract support
  • Monthly Plant BINGO! events sell out consistently
  • Seasonal pop-up events attract visitors from across Ontario
  • Garden production has doubled to meet growing demand

Carly’s marketing strategy is rooted in authenticity. She connects with customers by sharing real stories, both online and in person about her journey, her business, and the care behind every product. By focusing on community, storytelling, and genuine relationships, she has successfully grown her business without any paid advertising.

Carly is most proud of the impact Bounty from the Boonies has had on the community. Customers visit not just to shop, but to connect and to find comfort, joy, and belonging. The shop has become a space where people can share their experiences, learn new skills, and build meaningful relationships.
