Brookstead Fine Flowers

Brookstead Fine Flowers is a full‑service flower shop known for thoughtful, custom floral arrangements created for every occasion—from celebrations and events to meaningful “just because” moments. Serving Whitby, Durham Region, and surrounding areas, Brookstead Fine Flowers prides itself on creating unique, memorable designs that feel personal, intentional, and beautifully crafted.

Every arrangement reflects care, creativity, and a deep understanding of how flowers mark life’s most important moments.

Floristry runs in Hilary’s blood. Her grandfather was a florist, and she learned the basics from him early on. While she proudly follows in his footsteps, Brookstead Fine Flowers is very much her own path—modern, personal, and built with heart.

What started as a dream has grown into a business Hilary built from the ground up, rooted in family tradition and shaped by her own vision.

Why BACD

Hilary had worked with the Business Advisory Centre Durham before and knew firsthand the value of having experienced support when turning an idea into a sustainable business.

From early conversations when the business was still just a dream to participating in the Starter Company Plus Program, funded by the Ministry of Economic Development, Job Creation and Trade, BACD played a role at every key stage of growth.

Working with BACD helped Hilary become more intentional and strategic in how she runs her business. Through coaching, programming, and accountability, she became more mindful of her advertising, her finances, and her relationships within the community.  Just as importantly, the process strengthened her confidence as a business owner and sharpened her decision‑making.

While Brookstead Fine Flowers has remained in the same location with the same team size, Hilary has seen a meaningful increase in her bottom line. Her systems, organization, and ability to delegate have all improved—clear signs of a business that is maturing and gaining momentum.

Social media has been one of the most impactful marketing tools for Brookstead Fine Flowers. It allows Hilary to showcase her work, connect with customers, and build strong relationships within the community.

Challenges, Wins, and Motivation

Like many women entrepreneurs, Hilary has had to wear all the hats. Balancing compassion, listening, and nurturing with being decisive and, at times, tough is a challenge many women in business can relate to. Learning to hold both has been a key part of her growth.

One recent win she’s proudly celebrating is making it through Valentine’s Day—still standing. The busiest and most demanding time of year for a florist requires intense planning, precise buying, long hours, and physical endurance. Coming out the other side is no small accomplishment.

What fuels Hilary most is providing for her children while showing them what’s possible. Building a business they can witness firsthand—one grounded in hard work, creativity, and independence—keeps her moving forward. The freedom that comes with being a business owner is both a powerful motivator and a deeply personal reward.

What She’s Most Proud Of

Hilary is most proud that she created Brookstead Fine Flowers from nothing. Since joining the Starter Company Plus program, her managerial skills, delegation, and organization have grown significantly—proof of both personal and professional evolution.

Advice for Other Entrepreneurs

“Don’t give up. Chase your dream, and take all the help, suggestions, and feedback that come your way. The freedom and pride you feel when building something you love is indescribable and completely worth the effort.”

For women in Durham Region dreaming of starting a business, Hilary’s message is simple and powerful: go for it. Life is only so long, and building something that brings you joy and pride is worth more than any role where you can be replaced.
