McGean Architecture + Design Inc.

For Adam McGean, architecture has always been more than blueprints and buildings—it’s about people. After years of working with some of Toronto’s largest firms on massive commercial projects, Adam found himself yearning for something deeper: the opportunity to connect with clients who would actually live, work, and thrive in the spaces he created. That desire for connection and impact became the foundation of McGean Architecture + Design Inc.

Launched in Pickering, Ontario, McGean Architecture + Design is licensed by the Ontario Association of Architects specializing in residential, commercial, and institutional projects. Adam focuses on delivering high-quality architectural solutions for underserved markets, helping homeowners, businesses, and institutions bring their ideas to life. Whether designing dream homes, functional workspaces, or inspiring public spaces, Adam combines creativity and precision to meet each client’s unique needs.

But starting his own firm wasn’t just about fulfilling a market gap; it was personal. Adam saw this venture as a way to align his professional ambitions with a more meaningful work-life balance. For him, smaller projects meant more collaboration and a chance to see the direct impact of his work.

In its first few years, McGean Architecture + Design grew steadily, but Adam knew it was time to pause and reflect. After saying “yes” to any and all work, it was time to shift focus and target the firm’s ideal clients for more purposeful growth. That’s when Adam turned to BACD and joined the Starter Company Plus Program, guided by Patrice Esper.

Through BACD, Adam gained invaluable insights into his business. He worked to identify his target audience, refine his service offerings, and articulate what set his firm apart. Perhaps the biggest breakthrough was a mindset shift: recognizing that small business owners often forget to reflect on their accomplishments. “We all have an origin story,” Adam says, “and we’re brave to put ourselves out there and stand behind our product.”

Armed with clarity and confidence, Adam now has a clear vision for the future. As a one-person operation, he currently wears all the hats—architect, owner, and operator. However, BACD’s guidance helped him map out a 10-year plan to expand his team and scale his services.

When it comes to marketing, Adam focuses on building trust and relationships. He’s tapped into his personal and professional networks to secure word-of-mouth referrals. Collaborating with established general contractors has also been a game-changer, helping him build a reliable project pipeline. And, of course, his website serves as a vital tool for showcasing his work and proving credibility in a competitive industry.

Adam’s advice to aspiring entrepreneurs is simple yet profound: “Plan the launch of your company more than the company itself. You don’t need perfection on day one, but you do need to prepare for the right moment to take the leap.”

Today, McGean Architecture + Design is thriving, and Adam has never looked back. His passion for creating meaningful spaces and his commitment to client relationships continue to drive the firm forward. With each new project, Adam proves that architecture isn’t just about designing buildings—it’s about designing experiences, connections, and lives.
