Kat's Craft Corner

Stitching Together Community

Kat’s Craft Corner is a Canadian craft store specializing in fibre arts, including knitting, crocheting, embroidery, and cross-stitch. More than just a retail store, Kat’s Craft Corner is a welcoming community space where creativity, learning, and connection come together.

With a commitment to supporting Canadian makers, more than half of the store’s products are produced, sourced, and/or dyed in Canada. The business strives to make quality crafting accessible while creating an inclusive environment where people of all ages and skill levels can learn, share, and connect through creativity.

At its heart, Kat’s Craft Corner is helping grow a stronger community, one stitch at a time.

The inspiration behind Kat’s Craft Corner began with knitting. After retiring from high-level sports, Katherine found herself searching for a new community and creative outlet. Having grown up in a family where knitting, crocheting, and needlework were ways to connect generations, she rediscovered the joy and mindfulness that fibre arts could bring.

As she became more involved in organizations such as the Toronto Knitters Guild, her passion expanded beyond crafting itself to the broader fibre arts industry, including the journey from farm to fibre to finished product. That growing appreciation for the craft community and Canada’s role within the industry ultimately led to the creation of Kat’s Craft Corner.

Learning the Business Side of Creativity

While Katherine had a clear vision for her business, she knew there were areas where she wanted to build her knowledge and confidence.

She connected with the Business Advisory Centre Durham to strengthen her understanding of business administration, cash flow planning, and financial management. Through the Starter Company Plus program (funded by the Province of Ontario), she gained practical tools, mentorship, and support that helped turn her vision into a stronger, more sustainable business.

Growing Confidence and Clarity

Working with BACD helped Katherine gain greater confidence in her business model, mission, and long-term goals.

The mentorship and resources she received reinforced the core values behind Kat’s Craft Corner while improving her understanding of cash flow management, goal setting, and business planning. Just as valuable were the connections she made with fellow entrepreneurs in the Starter Company Plus program, creating opportunities to learn from others navigating similar journeys.

Expanding the Reach of the Store

One of the biggest impacts of the program was helping Katherine better articulate and market what makes Kat’s Craft Corner unique.

Through guidance from BACD, she refined her messaging, strengthened her marketing approach, and invested in professional booth fixtures that expanded her ability to participate in markets and community events. These improvements have helped introduce the business to new audiences while remaining true to its vision of community-focused creativity.

Building a Loyal Following

Kat’s Craft Corner has quickly become more than a store. It has become a gathering place for fibre artists and crafters from across the region.

The business has earned Platinum recognition in three categories through CommunityVotes Oshawa for two consecutive years. The store has also been nominated twice for the Emerging Business Award by the Greater Oshawa Chamber of Commerce.

These achievements reflect the strong community Katherine has built and the support she has earned from customers who have become loyal advocates for the business.

One of the most successful marketing strategies has been showcasing customer creations. By sharing customer-submitted photos and videos featuring projects made with products purchased from Kat’s Craft Corner, the business has increased engagement, website traffic, and sales conversions while highlighting the creativity of its community members.

While awards and recognition are rewarding, Katherine is most proud of the community that has formed around the business. Customers have become friends, mentors, learning partners, and advocates. Watching people discover a new hobby, build confidence, develop skills, and connect with others through crafting has been one of the most fulfilling aspects of the entrepreneurial journey.

A Word for Future Entrepreneurs

“Research and start small to test the public’s reception of your vision.”

Katherine believes that careful research, thoughtful planning, and testing ideas on a manageable scale can provide valuable insights before making larger investments.

Looking Ahead

Kat’s Craft Corner continues to welcome anyone interested in exploring the fibre arts, whether they’re picking up knitting needles for the first time or have been crafting for decades.

Katherine’s vision remains simple yet powerful: create a welcoming space where creativity thrives, friendships are formed, and community grows one stitch at a time.
