Biscuits to Baskets
From Home Kitchen to Community Favourite
For Suzanne Smith, business has always been personal. What started more than 20 years ago as a creative outlet and a way to support her family has grown into Biscuits To Baskets, a welcoming café, bakery, chocolate, and gift shop in the heart of Ajax.
Located at 109 Old Kingston Road, Unit 9, Biscuits To Baskets is more than a place to grab a coffee. It’s a space built on heart, resilience, and a genuine love for bringing people together. Suzanne and her team offer handcrafted coffee, matcha, and specialty drinks, alongside an irresistible selection of pastries, handmade chocolates, and beautifully curated gift arrangements. Every item is designed to help customers celebrate life’s moments—big and small.
“Baking people happy has always been my biggest inspiration,” Suzanne shares. “I truly love what I do.”
The Inspiration Behind the Business
Suzanne’s entrepreneurial journey began over two decades ago, fueled by creativity, determination, and her role as a single mom. Her children gave her the belief and courage to turn ideas into reality—and to keep going, even when things felt uncertain.
That passion carried her from a home‑based business to a brick‑and‑mortar storefront, a milestone she’s especially proud of. Today, Biscuits To Baskets continues to grow as a trusted, community‑loved destination.
Connecting with BACD
Suzanne was introduced to the Business Advisory Centre Durham (BACD) through the Town of Ajax. Even with years of experience under her belt, she knew there was still room to learn, grow, and strengthen her business.
“I learned that there is always more room for growth,” she says. “There is so much support and information available, especially for women‑owned businesses.”
Working with BACD Business Advisor Patrice Esper, Suzanne gained valuable clarity around finances, resources, and who to connect with next. Just as important was the ongoing support and encouragement.
“Patrice was so supportive and always checking in. That matters so much when you’re a small business owner.”
Growth, Marketing, and Momentum
One of the biggest shifts for Biscuits To Baskets has been moving from a home‑based operation to a physical location—creating a space where the community can gather, connect, and celebrate. Social media has played a key role in that growth. Suzanne credits consistent posting, authentic storytelling, and word‑of‑mouth as powerful tools.
“Use your voice,” she says. “Even a small post every day makes a difference.”
What She’s Most Proud Of
Above all, Suzanne is proud of her perseverance.
“We never gave up,” she says. “No matter what was handed to us, we kept going. Obstacles will happen. Believing in yourself—especially when challenges show up—is everything.”
Advice for Other Entrepreneurs
Suzanne’s advice is simple, honest, and powerful:
“When challenged, never give up. Step back, breathe, think, strategize, and have faith in yourself. If you don’t have the answers, ask. Your community is behind you.”
And her final reminder?
“Be you and give it all you’ve got. If you believe in yourself, people believe in you—and that’s where the magic happens.”
