Empowering Entrepreneurs for the Future of Work
Every October, Canada shines a spotlight on the heartbeat of our economy—small businesses. These are the innovators, risk-takers, and community builders who fuel local economies and shape the future of work. This year, Small Business Week runs from October 19–25, 2025, and the theme is all about preparing entrepreneurs for the economic revolution ahead.
With AI transforming industries, global trade shifting, and a generational wave of business ownership transitions underway, the landscape is evolving fast. And guess what? Small businesses are not just adapting—they’re leading the charge.
Small businesses make up 98% of all employer businesses in Canada. They create jobs, drive innovation, and build resilient communities. But beyond the stats, they represent something deeper: freedom, creativity, and the courage to build something from the ground up.
At BACD (Business Advisory Centre Durham), we’ve been proud to support thousands of entrepreneurs across Durham Region for over 25 years. Whether you’re just starting out or scaling up, we’re here with free advisory services, over 200 workshops a year, and programs that help you build a business that lasts.
The Power of Networking and Community
Success in business isn’t just about what you know—it’s about who you connect with. Small Business Week is your chance to meet other entrepreneurs, share ideas, and build relationships that can open doors.
This year, our lineup of events is designed to help you:

- Learn from experts in marketing, finance, tech, and strategy
- Discover new tools to future-proof your business
Whether you’re attending a workshop, joining a panel, or grabbing coffee with a fellow entrepreneur, every interaction is a chance to grow.
Growing Your Skills = Growing Your Business
In today’s fast-moving economy, staying sharp is non-negotiable. From mastering digital marketing to understanding AI’s impact on small business, our sessions are built to give you real, actionable insights.
Here’s what you can expect:
- Hands-on workshops that help you apply what you learn immediately

Small Business Week’s Roots
BDC Small Business Week was first launched in 1979 by the Business Development Bank of Canada (then known as the Federal Business Development Bank) in British Columbia’s Lower Fraser Valley. It started as a series of small business management training sessions and quickly grew into a national celebration. By 1981, it was officially recognized across Canada.
Today, it’s a registered trademark of BDC and attracts over 10,000 entrepreneurs annually to events that foster learning, networking, and collaboration.
