Growing Fresh, Sustainable Food in Durham Region
What began as a passion for sustainability, healthy living, and fresh plant-based food has grown into Durham Region’s first commercial vertical farm serving customers directly.
Founded by Derrik Stevenson, Northgrove Produce and part of Mighty Harvest grows premium leafy greens and microgreens indoors year-round using innovative vertical farming methods. The company rebranded its direct-to-consumer business as Northgrove Produce while continuing to operate under Mighty Harvest Farms Inc.
Northgrove’s produce is grown without pesticides or herbicides and uses approximately 90% less water than conventional farming, providing customers with a fresh, environmentally responsible option for locally grown food.
The company delivers throughout Durham Region, from Pickering to Newcastle, offering convenient one-time, weekly, and bi-weekly ordering options. In addition to serving households, Northgrove supplies fresh produce to restaurants and food-service establishments across Durham Region and Toronto.
Today, Northgrove operates from its second location in Ajax and employs three team members. Its continued growth reflects increasing demand for locally grown, sustainable food and a commitment to providing fresh, high-quality produce to the community.
When launching the business, Derrik turned to the Business Advisory Centre Durham (BACD) for support. Through introductions to key regional contacts, startup planning guidance, and strategic marketing advice, BACD helped Northgrove build a strong foundation for growth.
One of the company’s most effective marketing strategies has been connecting directly with customers through farmers’ markets. These face-to-face conversations help build trust, educate consumers about vertical farming, and create lasting customer relationships. Facebook and Instagram also play an important role in reaching and engaging local customers.
For aspiring entrepreneurs, Derrik’s advice is simple:
“Start with a business plan, talk to as many people as you can about it, and be open to feedback.”
