The Town of Whitby and the Business Advisory Centre Durham Inc. announce revitalization of Downtown Whitby and Brooklin through partnership with My Main Street

Whitby, Ontario – January, 28, 2022 – Today, the Town of Whitby and the Business Advisory Centre Durham Inc. are pleased to announce that Downtown Whitby and Brooklin will be participating in the My Main Street Local Business Accelerator program to help revitalize our main streets.  In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Government of Canada, through the Federal Economic Development Agency for Southern Ontario (FedDev Ontario), announced a $23.25-million investment to the Canadian Urban Institute (CUI) and the Economic Developers Council of Ontario (EDCO) to establish My Main Street — a two-year program to support the recovery and revitalization of main streets and local businesses in southern Ontario through two program streams. EDCO is delivering the My Main Street Local Business Accelerator program stream, which supports the revitalization of 65 main street communities, and provides non-repayable contributions for more than 650 local businesses across southern Ontario. The program focuses on creating and maintaining vibrant and inclusive local main streets while providing residents, new entrepreneurs, and existing businesses with economic opportunities in our main street communities. Downtown Whitby and Downtown Brooklin will be supported with 3 dedicated Main Street Ambassadors, customized market research, data analysis and non-repayable funding contributions for new and existing small businesses.

In Downtown Whitby, the Main Street Ambassadors will also have the support of the Whitby BIA in working with the mainstreet businesses.  In Brooklin, the Main Street Ambassadors will have the support of the Downtown Brooklin Steering Committee.

“The Government of Canada recognizes the challenges that main street businesses are facing as a result of the pandemic, and we are taking action to help mitigate the strain. Programs like My Main Street offer critical funding and services for local businesses as they find ways to adapt and create new and inclusive economic opportunities that will help them rebuild and restore vibrancy to their main streets.”
  • The Honourable Helena Jaczek, Minister Responsible for the Federal Economic Development Agency for Southern Ontario
“The My Main Street Local Business Accelerator Program is made possible by a sizeable investment from the Government of Canada through FedDev Ontario and directly supports our local business community. This program will help our local entrepreneurs and small businesses bounce back from Covid-19 and ensure we continue to build flourishing and vibrant downtowns in Whitby and Brooklin. We know our small businesses are the beating heart of our main streets and ensuring they are thriving and prosperous is a high priority for the residents of our community.”
  • Ryan Turnbull, Member of Parliament for Whitby
“I would like to thank the Government of Canada for this important investment, which will help support new and existing small businesses located in both of our downtowns. Through this funding, our local businesses will have access to dedicated and hands-on support through the Main Street Ambassadors, as well as resources to help them grow.”
  • His Worship Don Mitchell, Town of Whitby

“The Downtown Whitby BIA was proud to support the Business Advisory Centre Durham Inc. and the Town of Whitby’s joint application for the My Main Street Community Ambassador Program” said Madeleine Riley, Executive Director of the Downtown Whitby BIA. “We will continue to support the Community Ambassadors as they work closely with our membership.”

The Business Advisory Centre Durham is pleased to have been awarded the funding to deliver this program in partnership with the Town of Whitby. Main Street businesses have suffered during the pandemic and this program is to help them recover and strengthen their offering to the community.”
