The real "McCoy" expression is used when you are seeking the "real thing", what you know to be of high quality - not an imitation. The noted African American inventor, Elijah McCoy, born in 1843, in Colchester, Ontario was issued more than 57 patents for his inventions during his lifetime. His best know invention was a cup that fed lubricating oil to machine bearings. Machinists and engineers who wanted genuine McCoy lubricators used the expression, still used today, "the real McCoy".
